Working from Home While Caring for Kids

By: Hailey Fletcher: Talent Consultant @ MOTR Staffing

Working from home has its challenges, adding in a child who is also home is an entirely different game. And while it sounds scary, it can be done, and it can be done effectively!

So, if you are in a position to make the move, here are some tips that will help you succeed.

1. Create a Routine. If you’ve already been working from home then you’ve likely noticed the big difference the small things you did in an office had on your day. You’re no longer making your cup of coffee while chatting with co-workers in the breakroom before heading to your desk to dive into the day’s tasks…there is no one asking if you’re ready for lunch or a group walking towards the afternoon meeting that reminds you it’s time to go too. Those little things kept our brains on somewhat of a schedule and without them you may find yourself struggling to stay productive. This is magnified if you have a child at home who wants your attention. If you don’t have the day planned out it’s going to be easy to avoid your work and be stuck stressed at the end of the day.

2. Dress to Impress. Okay so maybe you’re not really looking to impress your kids and I get it, the idea of being in uncomfortable clothes while chasing them around the house seems silly… but research shows when you wake up and get dressed for the day, you have better mental clarity. So, while no one expects you to put on heels or dress shoes, getting out of your PJs will likely help your productivity.

3. Create a safe workspace near your child. If you are working from home while taking care of little ones without outside help, you’ll of course need to keep them in sight. Set up a secondary location to your primary workspace. Here you can do some of the easier tasks on your to-do list while they play or snack.

4. Utilize Nap Time. This goes back to creating a routine, if your child isn’t already on a solid schedule now is the time to create one. This quiet time is a great way to structure your workload. Plan to tackle your most important tasks or meetings during this time.

5. Make Your Mental Health a Priority. No matter how well you plan, some days you’re going to feel like you didn’t fulfill everyone’s needs. That is OK! Remember to give yourself grace and take time to refocus. Even when you feel like you can’t possibly take 5 or 10 minutes for yourself with all you have left to do, do it. The results will pay off for

everyone. If you’re working from home, your employer trusts you and is confident you can do this. They want you to succeed and making your mental health a priority will help ensure you do.
