Setting Career Goals for the New Year

By: Hailey Fletcher, Talent Consultant @ MOTR Staffing

If you are in a career you love and want to advance, there is no better time to set goals and take action than the start of the new year. Whether you are looking for a promotion with a new title, itching to learn new skills or expand upon the set you have, here are some simple tips to get the ball rolling.

1. Set Your Goal. This may seem like a no-brainer but really taking the time to picture where you want to be at the end of this year and writing it down will kick start the motivation to act.

2. Check In. Have an honest conversation with your manager or mentor about where you are at your career level and where you want to be. Discuss what that path could look like and ask for guidance on taking the steps to get there.

3. Hold Yourself Accountable. Don’t let your annual review be your only timeline. Set daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals and check-ins with yourself and your manager if he/she is willing to. Don’t be afraid to write these goals down and physically check them off with a pen once it’s complete.

4. Think Beyond Your Job. Are there skills that you could improve on that are not directly related to your job but could be useful for that promotion you’re after?

For example, could you benefit from public speaking or writing courses? Are you up to speed on the latest technology in your industry, even if it’s not what you currently use? You never know what could make the difference in you getting the job over someone else.

Being well-rounded is like a gold star to recruiters and hiring managers.
