How To Build or Pivot Into a Career in Sustainability

Sustainability is a broad, relatively new field — and it is not going anywhere. In fact, it is expanding into all different careers. The United Nations defines Sustainability as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is broken into three pillars:

1) Environmental

2) Social

3) Economic

You can read more about the three pillars: here

If you already know what pillar or career you would like to pivot to the next best thing to do is gain some education. There are a ton of legitimate courses, certificates, degrees etc that you can try for free on Coursera. Companies such as Google, AutoDesk and many more also offer industry recognized certificates and degrees that are industry recognized. You can even share your Certificate in the Certifications section of your LinkedIn profile, on printed resumes, CVs, or other documents. There are courses and other Sustainability education programs for careers in engineering, Data Science, Business, Arts & Humanities, IT, Social Sciences and many more.

There are over 200 courses and education tracks on Coursera in Sustainability. Check them out here: Sustainability Courses.

Businesses are reacting by creating new roles focused on developing ESG-friendly practices and solutions in every function. Because these roles are new to everyone, the playing field is even. Both junior and senior employees can land them and the time to start developing new skills and furthering your education in Sustainability is now.
