How To Set Boundaries When You Start a New Job

Failing to set boundaries early on is not only exhausting, but it also traps you into high expectations that you need to continually live up to, which can be demoralizing, unsustainable and lead to burnout. Here are a few tips when starting a new job so that you can balance your own needs and make a good first impression in the process.

  • Identify your "why" - most of the time our motivations are positive like wanting to show that we are hardworking overachievers but we often let fear self sabotage us into thinking we have to always say "yes" and before you know it you're spread to thin. All of a sudden your brand new fresh start has turned into burnout before you have accomplished what you set out for yourself in your new job.

  • Self-Management and Setting Boundaries - This is an emotional intelligence skill that is also a big part of leadership. Learn to say no. Are you saying yes to much and coming off as a pushover when you're really just trying to be a "people pleaser."

  • Articulate your personal preferences - Do you know that you operate at your highest levels between 7:00 AM - 11:00 AM? Can your new company accommodate the majority of meetings and other arrangements outside of your high productivity window?

  • Apply your energy with intention - Make sure that you're using your energy where it makes the most impact

  • Follow through on new habits - Staring a new job is also a chance for a fresh start. Hold yourself accountable to new habits that you want to incorporate into your life both professionally, emotionally and personally.
