How To Attract Top Talent Without Increasing Salaries

In order to hire Top Talent you have to understand not only what Top Talent already has at their current employer but what they don't have that your company could provide.

There has been a massive shift on what the meaning of work is. The old school corporate ladder progression into greater responsibility and leadership is outdated and not valued especially by the younger generations. Outside of greater compensation Top Talent is typically looking for one or more of the following:

  1. To Be Valued.

  2. The Flexibility to have work integrate with their own personal life.

  3. How will each employee have the potential to grow?

  4. Inclusion.

You can start this now by looking internally. It can be as simple as an idea box to meeting one on one. If your current top talent have ideas, listen to them and hear them out on how they would go about implementing such a change if they were in your position. Let your existing Top Talent lead the charge, start a movement internally and it will show externally. Employees that know they're heard, also feel valued.

Top Talent is also considered to be top talent more than their existing skillset of design, programming, engineering, sales etc but who they are as a person and an employee. If Top Talent is looking to go remote you will need to find a way to meet this need in some way. If you trust your employee in the office, you should trust them/allow them to prove they can be just as (often more) productive when getting work done outside of the office; work together to find a happy medium and it will literally pay off.

The corporate growth ladder concept is increasingly outdated. Continuing Education and Career Certifications are easily accessible and offered by Top Colleges and Tech Companies thus allowing new and interesting skillsets to just about anyone who is interested. Employers should keep those options in mind as potential ways to sweeten the package and attract talent. Sustainability, for example, is a big career interest amongst Architects and Engineers and so is data analytics. If Top Talent wanted to change their career path and it would be beneficial for your company, can you adapt to new and different career paths?

An environment that prioritizes inclusion allows everyone to function at their highest levels. Go into every meeting with new people free of expectations and assumptions. Listen intently to new perspectives. It will only give you a broader mind and worldview, which supercharges your decision-making.

These are just a few (mutually beneficial) strategies to help attract and retain the best talent possible.
