How to Change Careers

First, it's important to determine if you need a career change or simply a career shift. Maybe you’re a design engineer but you want to go into sales instead. This could be achievable at your current job or at least in your engineering network but if you’re looking to do something totally different it’s important to understand that changing careers won't happen over night.



1. Find the time and prepare to spend a lot of time on making a career change possible. If you’re currently employed prepare to spend literally all of your free time on acquiring new skills and education and most importantly you must commit.


2. Understand the skills needed to change careers and learn them. Interview people in the field and utilize your Linkedin network as well as some great tools that Linkedin has called Linkedin Learning. Linkedin Learning has a ton of courses that help you determine the skills you need to enter a new profession. Some of the courses also have certifications. Read more about Linkedin Learning here:


3. Start working on the education and credentials needed to start on your new career path. A lot of major companies especially in Tech like Amazon AWS have there own programs. The AWS Certification validates cloud expertise to help professionals highlight in-demand skills and organizations build effective, innovative teams for cloud initiatives using AWS. Role-based certifications are available for those in Cloud Practitioner, Architect, Developer, and Operations roles, as well as our Specialty certifications in specific technical areas.


4. Write a new resume and cater it best to the job description for the positions you apply to. It’s important to use the right key words or there is a good chance your resume will be declined on the back end. You can read more about catering your resume to get noticed by ATS systems here:
